Opt-Out Organ Donation
Opt-out Organ Donation Legislation in New York will save lives and show New Yorkers the default for Organ Donation is helping others. We’re pushing to change the box on DMV license sign-ups from an “opt-in” option to an “opt-out,” while adding more ways to easily remove yourself from the list.
Our primary concern is the autonomy of New Yorkers, so we’re adding a requirement that the commissioner providing assistance with the form inform you of this change to the process, in addition to a letter in the mail and an email informing New Yorkers of the change with easy options to opt-out.
New York has the lowest rate of donation and is in dire need of transplants. Adding the option to opt-in on licenses was successful in 2013. Opt-out will increase the rates of donation, according to Stanford University. Opt-out will decrease the waiting list in New York for our residents. Most New Yorkers are “very likely” to donate if a family member needs them.
